Project update

Sorry, but I only have time for a short update today. I'm about 4,000 words into my new book (working title Empty Spaces) and I'm feeling pretty good about it so far.

It's a psychological thriller that follows two survivors of a horrific school shooting (with a couple of nasty plot twists!). The main characters are a 34-year-old teacher and an 18-year-old female student, the aforementioned survivors.

Of course, one of them isn't who you might think he/she is. ;)

The biggest hurdle for me so far is getting back into the writing-everyday routine. I wrote a ton yesterday, almost to the point of burnout. Today, I wrote far less. Sigh. I know from past experience that the routine will eventually come if I just stay with it.

So, I'm curious. What are you guys writing? I'd love to hear the "elevator pitch" for your WIP.

  1. way to go man! sounds like your inching your way back into the swing of things!

elevator pitch: A teenage girl tries to avenge the ritualistic murder of the girl who used to live in her house. Think THE LOTTERY with ghosts, magic, and cafeteria food.

but i'm changing so much in rewrites- who knows if that will work when i'm done...

  2. I'm still on Genna & Tony at 58K. 30 more to go and I'm done. Altho I wrote the ending the other day so now all I have to do is figure out how to get there.

I don't really have a pitch. I suppose I should make one up though. Although I already wrote the query and that, as well as Act 1 is out with beta's.

This one is for the win, if I don't get any fulls on this I'm hanging up my hat.

And hey, you should stop by to see the character sketches I'm doing. I mean, if you get a minute. I don't mean to sound pushy.

  3. I need to find a way to get back into writing mode. My WIP is sort of La Femme Nikita (the movie, not the show) meets Quentin Tarantino, but set in 2138 Moscow.

  4. Stumbled upon your blog while doing some research. Good luck with your writing projects. It is difficult to keep up with the writing routine...but I think getting any amount of writing done is better than nothing! :)

My main project is a novel that focuses on an intense relationship between a mother and her daughter. I don't want to give too much away until I organize all my thoughts and ideas but I have about 20+ pages so far!

  5. Go Terry!

Sadly, I'm not really writing anything new at the moment. I'm pretty much re-writing chunks of my Gemini manuscript so it's ready for a new round of revisions in September. :D

  6. I'm researching pre-civil war North Carolina about a tale of a young girl in love with a charming ne'er-do-well, but forced into a marriage with a wealthy, but rumored-to-have-killed-someone, plantation owner. Over the course of the book, there will be a switch between who she loves and who is a murderer.

  7. Hi Terry,

It's always hard getting back in the swing. I find if I write right through the "stuck" times, it all starts to flow again. Your new novel sounds interesting.

    My elevator pitch? Here goes:

"An aging one-hit-wonder tries to help his girlfriend's timid, obese daughter find her "cool". But instead, the kid, a budding zoologist and "genius", leads him to take risks he never imagined, including a no-holds-barred rescue of a band'mate's long neglected gibbon"

Obviously, I have to work on this....

  8. Go, Terry! Hard to get back in the swing, isn't it? I'm working on edits. Pitches, too.

When an heir, missing sixteen years, shows up to claim his inheritance. His old girl friend suspects he's an imposter while his murderer knows he is.

    Or something like that.

I hate pitches. And queries. And synopses! Heck, I don't even like writing! It's just something I do.
