What's your favorite band?

Since I can't seem to find the time to blog regularly about things like, you know, my writing, I thought perhaps we could take some time and get to know one another a little better.

With that in mind, I've decided to post a few short pieces about my favorite things, like bands, songs, books, authors, films, etc. And I would love for you guys to chime in with some of yours, as well. Not only is it always interesting to get to know people better, but perhaps we'll find some overlap, something in our psyche that makes us as writers more alike than different.

Or not. Who knows?

Anyway, I decided to start with my favorite bands (or musicians, if you'd like).

Back in the day, I'd have to say Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin were my favorites. Shortly after I cut my hair and went punk, I discovered Elvis Costello and the Attractions and The Clash. One consistent band throughout my life has always been Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. I've seen them live five times over the years. I've also seen Zeppelin and Costello, too.

Funny story: My wife and I saw Elvis Costello and the Attractions in Chicago shortly before we were married (probably in '95 or so), and the drummer hit on my wife! Seriously. We had met the band outside the arena and got Elvis to sign his own handwritten set list my wife had managed to sweet talk away from one of the roadies. I was both jealous and proud that my wife would attract the attention of a world famous rock star. Of course, I'd have killed the bastard if he had actually, you know, put the moves on her. But he was very nice about his flirting.

Needless to say, she became a huge Costello fan and remains one to this day.

The band I'm currently in love with is Arcade Fire. They are completely, totally awesome. Right up there with the best of them, in my opinion. We haven't seen them in concert yet, but if they come around, you can bet we'll be there.

So. How about you guys. What's your faves? Any stories behind them? Do tell.

  1. Asking my favorite band is like asking what my favorite hour to breathe is. I have a top list? Pink Floyd, CCR, Blue October, Seether, Tom Petty, Joan Jett, Death Cab for Cutie, Disturbed, BoDeans, AC/DC, and omg I could just keep going and going. I love music, but those I would never turn off if they came on the radio.

  2. Nickelback, Maroon 5, Rob Thomas (with or without Matchbox 20), Evanescence,P!nk, and I'll second Blue October. Not a big Seether fan, but I do like the song Broken, which they did with Evanescence.

I grew up on Classic Country music (60's-80's) and can listen to that for hours. Keith Whitley, Johnny Cash, Waylon, George Strait, John Schneider (yes, the guy from the Dukes of Hazzard), Reba, etc.

I have a strange affinity for Crowded House from when I was a kid.

My tastes are all over the place. Just don't make me listen to boy bands or bubblegum pop. I will not be held responsible for my reaction.

  3. OOooohhhh...Zoot Suit Riot, Goo-Goo Dolls, Evanescence, Hooba Stank, Boston, Styx...and...my first and only true band obsession...the Beatles. But I have to say, I really struggle with their early stuff. There's some gems in there, but I am much more fond of Seargent Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Road, etc...

  5. My musical influences grew up in the boyband era. As a pre-teen it was New Kids on the Block who snagged my musical tastes & heart. Then in my early twenties, it was Nsync. Both of which I still list among my favs. Though to balance out my love of pop music I have also gravitated to deeper, more hard edged stuff like Hoobastank.

As far as stories go, I've been in two pop music videos (though sadly, not for either Nsync or NKOTB).

  6. A few years ago, it would have been Dylan (Not a exactly a band, I know) but lately, I'm all about Modest Mouse.

  7. Good choices, but I wish to be the first to add Adam and the Ants.

  8. My favorite band is Def Leppard. You would think that might make sense until you realize that I was a 90's child and 80's music was not only before my time, but decidedly uncool for a teenager. Blame it on parents who listened to nothing else I guess. Anyhow - they were and still are the band I listen to when I need to relax and have some fun.
